(TALLAHASSEE, Florida) – SouthWood Golf Club – the award winning, upscale public course at the heart of one of Tallahassee’s most comprehensively designed communities – has been named to the ZAGAT Survey listing of "America’s Top Golf Courses" for 2006/07.
In addition to being named to this prestigious listing, SouthWood was also honored by the ZAGAT Survey as "best of" in the categories:
Among the most thorough rating guides in all of golf, ZAGAT covers more than 1,000 of the best public, semi-private and resort courses in the United States. Courses in the guide are rated based on the responses of more than 6,000 reviewers who play more than 552,000 rounds annually. Strength of layout, value, overall quality, facility and service standards are taken into consideration.
"We are honored to be recognized as one of America’s top courses by this prestigious and objective publication," says SouthWood General Manager Beth Murphy. "It’s particularly exciting to receive ‘best of’ recognition for so many of our facility’s outstanding attributes."
Being named to the ZAGAT Survey is the latest in a long line of distinctions SouthWood has received. Most recently, the course was named among the Top-10 layouts of the new millennium by Travel + Leisure Golf. SouthWood was also named to Golf Digest’s list of "America’s Best New Courses," selected by GOLF Magazine as one of the top 35 public courses – out of 325 nationwide – to open in 2002, and named Tallahassee’s best golf course by Tallahassee Magazine.
Designed by PGA Tour star Fred Couples and renowned architect Gene Bates, SouthWood Golf Club is set among thick bosques of stunning, Spanish moss-draped oak trees. The 7,172-yard layout was tactfully and strategically routed over rolling hills, through wooded areas and across open land to provide a variety of settings and shot-making opportunities.
A course that tests Tour-quality players and provides an enjoyable experience for golfers of all abilities, SouthWood features five sets of tees on every hole. The 2,986-yard "Wee Tees" provide the ideal course set-up for juniors, beginners or players seeking to improve their short game.
Set on 3,200-acres of land complete with hills, open pastures, natural lakes and towering oaks, St. Joe’s SouthWood is one of the largest and most comprehensively planned communities in Florida’s capital region. SouthWood is located in Tallahassee, just four miles from Florida’s Capitol building and includes St. Joe-built and custom-designed homes.
SouthWood is a place where neighbors will be able to walk or bike to Town Center for shopping, dinner, or work, and currently enjoy the SouthWood Education Village for lifelong learning opportunities and other events. There also are abundant outdoor recreational activities, including a nationally recognized, upscale public golf course designed by PGA Tour pro Fred Couples, a community center and golf club complex, and miles of paved walking and biking trails that wind through the community.
SouthWood is tucked among 1,000 acres of parks, lakes and ponds surrounded by massive Patriarch oaks that gracefully sweep the ground. An abundance of native wildlife creates an ever-changing landscape for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
