The Lopaka Putter was designed in 1994 by Robert Scott, who had become totally frustrated with a blade putter. A blade has loft that can be 2 to 6 degrees, and the putter has to make contact with the ball at the desired loft that the manufacturer applies to that putter. If the loft is closed down due to the hands getting ahead of the ball, then the ball will skid or be driven in a downward motion. If the hands get behind the ball the loft increases and acts as a mini chipper that causes the ball to hop.
Scott began experimenting with different diameters of cylinders and found one that was almost the diameter of a golf ball. The cylindrical design of the Lopaka Putter doesn’t have any loft. It is a solid cylinder whose diameter nearly matches the golf ball and because the face is round it strikes the ball on its equator, making a more immediate and smoother roll. The design of the Lopaka Putter requires the putter head be kept parallel with the ground, and a low back and through stroke should be used.
The Lopaka Putter features either a straight or offset shaft. The offset shaft can be either face balanced or partially toe-weighted. Standard lengths are 34 to 35 inches, although 30 to 37 inches can be ordered.
The Lopaka Putter was the official putter at the May 2005 Northern California Golf Expo in San Mateo. It was an instant success with golfers at the expo who tested it. The putter was featured on all putting greens as well as the 50 foot putting contest.
