CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 7, 2005 â?¦ The legend of La Costa Resort and Spa continues to grow, as the historic luxury destination recently was named among the best golf resorts in the country, as voted by the readers of Travel + Leisure Golf Magazine. The rankings appear in the current issue.
La Costa Resort and Spa, part of the family of KSL Resorts, was selected No. 3 in the "Best Golf Resort" category for the West and Northwest United States, behind only the famed Pebble Beach Resorts, and No. 2-ranked Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. La Costa, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, was the highest ranked golf resort in Southern California, and also earned a No. 1 ranking in the "Best Spa/Gym" category for the West and Northwest.
"This is a wonderful acknowledgement, because it really comes from our guests, who always are our first priority," said Desi Howe, director of golf at La Costa. "It is a tribute to both the completely remodeled resort, as well as a golf experience that combines a tremendous history and tradition with all the luxury amenities and first-class service that guests expect at La Costa."
La Costa, the first golf resort in the United States with a full-service spa when it opened in 1965, was named ahead of No.2 Pebble Beach and the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, also in Carlsbad, for best honors in the Spa/Gym category. A remodeled athletic club that overlooks the two championship golf courses and the elegant Spa at La Costa were part of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment project recently completed.
The top-to-bottom facelift also featured completely remodeled guest rooms, rebuilt clubhouse, a newly designed ballroom (Costa Del Sol Ballroom), and two freshly conceived restaurants (Legends and BlueFire Grill). It also is home to the world-renowned Chopra Center.
Legendary among spa aficionados, professional and amateur golfers, as well as professional and amateur tennis players, La Costa’s centerpiece is a 36-hole golf facility that has won numerous awards — including "Top 100" by GOLF Magazine, "Best Places to Play" by Golf Digest, "Best of Golf" by LINKS Magazine, and "Top Women-Friendly Courses" by Golf for Women. The resort has hosted PGA Tour events for nearly 40 years and next year is to host the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play Championship.
La Costa’s two courses – the North Course and South Course — each feature a classic design that include striking and traditional touches, challenging golfers’ shot-making ability from tee to green. Four sets of tees provide a course length for all players to enjoy. Both courses are snuggled into the foothills of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego, meandering through 400 scenic acres accented by luxurious homes.
Developed by the editors of Travel + Leisure Golf, the World’s Best Golf Resorts reader survey was conducted online on www.tlgolf.com from April 28 to June 30. Rankings are based on scores based on votes received. Respondents were permitted to complete the survey only once.
"Our readers’ passion for the game is reflected in this year’s results-they travel extensively for great golf experiences," said Travel + Leisure Golf editor in chief John Atwood. For more details on the rankings, visit www.tlgolf.com.
