Nickent Golf had a winning hand at the Gila River Golf Classic in Arizona. Not only did the winner of the event carry a 3DX Ironwood for his first Nationwide Tour victory and a guarantee that he will play on the PGA Tour next year, but Nickent also claimed the # 1 hybrid ranking on the Nationwide Tour for the fourth straight week.
Thirty-three 3DX’s in seven different lofts were put into play, beating the next closest hybrid manufacturer by a 12-club margin. The 38-year-old winner, an Australian, finished with a 20-under 268, giving Nickent their third Nationwide Tour victory of the season.
The $81,000 victory check moves the winner from No. 25 to No. 8 on the Nationwide money list. The top 21 at the end of the season will earn 2006 PGA Tour cards. Last year, he just missed his PGA TOUR card after finishing No. 23 on the money list.
"This is as good as I’ve ever played," said the Gila River Golf Classic champion. "I struck it well and putted well all week. It hasn’t sunk in yet. I’ve tried deliberately not to think about getting to the PGA TOUR. But it does feel good to finally lock up my card. I can sit back and relax a little bit."
Five players in the Top 21 are currently using the 3DX Ironwood and 5 more 3DX players are in the Top 35, which is still within striking distance of the PGA Tour with three Nationwide Tour events left to play this year. Over 150 players on the 2005 PGA Tours play the 3DX Ironwood, all without Nickent having a single player contracted or paid tee-up money to play the club.
