Organization Sites Speed of Play During Tournament Play as Primary Reason for the Ruling
Overland Park, KS, October19, 2005 – On the heels of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s (R&A) announcement to permit use of distance measuring devices by local rule, the Kansas City Golf Association becomes the first regional golf association to approve the devices for tournament play. The Association stated improved pace of play as one of the key reason for the decision.
"We have followed the advancements in laser rangefinders and other electronic measuring devices over the past few years and are confident they are capable of providing consistent and accurate distances for the players," said Steve McMillen, Executive Director of the KCGA. "These improvements provide two significant benefits; they allow every golfer, regardless of their familiarity with the course, to confidently gauge the distance needed for each shot; and by quickly ascertaining those distances, we believe we can improve the pace of play."
"Golf is a game rooted in tradition, so we expected that the major tours would be hesitant to adopt laser rangefinders during play even though nearly all of the golfers and their caddies use laser rangefinders during practice rounds to accurately calculate distance for their yardage books," said Joe Messner, president of Bushnell. "We believe that the speed of play benefits that the Kansas City Golf Association and other organizations will ultimately make the use of rangefinders a matter of necessity."
