Lucky Craig Townsend will have the chance to sample the golf resort that has been hailed as the new number one in Spain after finally coming forward to claim his star £1,500 prize.
Craig’s entry was drawn out two weeks ago as the winner of Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort’s competition to win a week’s golfing holiday for four people to Spain.
The 41-year-old entered the competition at the luxury property development’s stand at this month’s ‘A Place in the Sun Live’ overseas travel show and correctly answered ‘Srixon’ to the question: "Which golf ball does Ryder Cup star Miguel Angel Jimeéånez use?"
But Hacienda del Alamo were unable to inform Craig that he had won the holiday because he had neglected to fill in all his contact details on his entry form – apart from his home town of Bexley, Kent.
The five-star resort, near Fuente Alamo, Murcia, issued an appeal for Craig to come forward and was forced to endure a nerve-wracking wait before he finally collected his prize.
Craig said: "I had no idea the draw took place a couple of weeks ago and that I was the only winner.
"I’ve never won anything like this before in my life. Hacienda del Alamo looks very good and I can’t wait to get out there and see for myself what it’s like. The only problem that I face now is deciding who to take with me."
The holiday also includes five rounds of golf plus flights and car hire and will give Craig the chance to explore the thriving region of Murcia, the new property hotspot in Spain.
The 22-handicapper, who is married to wife Julia, 37, and has two daughters Leah and Abigail, already owns one villa in Spain on the Costa Almeria but is keen to invest in a second overseas property as he looks to the long-term future.
Craig added: "We have owned a home at Majacar for the last three years that is built on a golf course and near the beach and we’re looking to buy another.
"That was the reason that we went to ‘A Place in the Sun Live’ but one of the problems with buying overseas is that you have to take a look at the resort you’re interested in which takes time and money.
"Winning the holiday means that we have the opportunity to look at Hacienda del Alamo and Murcia for ourselves and that will help us when we come to make a final decision."
Billy Sim, Hacienda del Alamo’s director of golf, said: "We’re delighted Craig has come forward to claim his prize because he was one of the few people to get the answer to the question right.
"Hacienda del Alamo is the real Spain and we look forward to welcoming him and his guests to the area."
The week-long trip is the second prize to be given away by Hacienda del Alamo as part of a massive UK marketing campaign that was unveiled at ‘A Place in the Sun’ Live.
Golfer Paul Williams was the proud recipient of a brand new set of golf clubs when he claimed victory in Hacienda’s nearest the pin competition that was run on their unique golf simulator.
Paul gave up the game last year and thought his luck was out on the 109-yard par three virtual reality hole when he missed the ball completely with his first attempt.
But, far from being downhearted, the 43-year-old from Ilford, Essex, took aim again, promptly fired his next effort to within three inches of the hole and walked off with new set of Srixon i-403 AD irons.
Hacienda del Alamo has earned widespread acclaim since launching their promotional program and have turned to the ‘Voice of Golf’ Peter Alliss to help endorse the public relations initiative.
Legendary broadcaster Alliss is at the forefront of Hacienda’s campaign on television and radio while adverts in the Daily Telegraph, The Business and Sunday Express and Easyjet’s in-flight magazine, A Place in the Sun – Everything Spain, Golf International, Classic FM and Golf TV have proclaimed it as "the new number one in Spain."
