Pine Needles recently completed a comprehensive restoration project under the direction of John Fought intended to return its championship course to its original 1927 Donald Ross design and included new features such as adding additional teeing grounds to lengthen the course to address new challenges presented by the "modern" game, bunker replacements and the addition of native grasses. Pine Needles is scheduled to host the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open. It also hosted the 1996 and 2001 U.S. Women’s Opens.
