PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida – Ponte Vedra Beach-based golf course architecture company Palmer Course Design, is pleased to announce that its first course in Portugal, The Victoria Clube de Golfe, will host the 2005 World Cup Championships – Algarve World Cup from Nov. 17-20 in Vilamoura. The World Cup Championships can be seen on ESPN from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and will be aired on ABC from 4:30 – 7 p.m. Saturday and beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
"As a past winner of the World Cup and leading worldwide ambassador for the game of golf, it was fitting that we should have the opportunity to play on a course designed by the great Arnold Palmer and his team," said PGA European Tour Director for the World Cup, Peter Adams. "The Victoria Clube is in excellent condition and features high-quality design and construction. It will also provide a fitting challenge for modern tournament players."
Designed with balanced nines, the front takes advantage of the Algarve’s native topography and utilizes natural drainage swales. The back nine at The Victoria Clube offers an open feel with soft rolling fairways of lush Bermuda and flowing natural streams. This par-72 course has an abundance of challenging water features meandering through the tract designed to complement and preserve the surrounding area’s hilly terrain. With 32 acres of lakes, The Victoria Clube capitalizes on the Palmer risk/reward philosophy and provides an unparalleled combination of stunning natural beauty and demanding play. The new 7,176-yard championship golf course is the longest 18-hole layout in the country.
The course was designed by Palmer Course Design Vice President and Senior Golf Course Architect Vicki Martz who has been involved in the design of over 50 golf courses from design concept to completion. Martz is one of only three female members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
The 2005 World Cup Championships will be seen in over 140 countries worldwide, reaching over 200 million viewers. The tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 17 and concludes on Sunday, Nov. 20. Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson will represent the United States as a team during the four-day tournament.
