(PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.) – The Northern California Section of the PGA is pleased to announce that Bradley S. Klein, Ph.D., architecture editor of Golfweek and founding editor of SuperNews, will be the afternoon keynote speaker at the 2005 NCPGA Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. Over 300 PGA golf professionals are expected to attend the meeting on December 5 at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Klein’s talk, titled "Behind the Scenes at America’s Best Courses" will provide an insider’s look at what makes for great – and not so great – golf in the U.S. today. A former PGA Tour caddie, Klein holds a Ph.D. in political science and enjoyed a distinguished academic career before "retiring" after 14 years on faculty to devote himself fulltime to golf writing and golf course analysis. "We are looking forward to having Bradley Klein as our guest speaker," states NCPGA President Mike Mazzaferri. "When it comes to golf course architecture and analysis, he is by far one of the most knowledgeable and respected experts in the industry."
At Golfweek, Klein lends serious focus to the "America’s Best" golf course rating program that publishes annual lists of the top-100 Classic and Modern courses. His frequent columns and news articles have helped pioneer a nationwide trend towards classic course restoration, tree management, and an emphasis upon traditional shot-making values. Klein’s writing is sometimes controversial because his topics are at the golf industry’s epicenter.
Besides his assignments with Golfweek and SuperNews, Klein is a respected author of four books on golf course architecture. His published work includes the definitive biography, Discovering Donald Ross, which won the USGA International Book Award for 2001, Rough Mediations: From Tour Caddie to Golf Course Critic, an Insider’s Look at the Game, and Desert Forest Golf Club: The First Forty Years. He also coauthored and compiled A Walk in the Park: Golfweek’s Guide to America’s Best Classic and Modern Courses.
A nationally renowned speaker, Klein is known for his informative yet animated style when addressing an audience. His presentation topics include golf course architecture, course maintenance, trends in golf, sports media and communications. A respected journalist, Klein also teaches seminars on writing and communications to golf industry professionals. He serves on the board of directors for the Donald Ross Society and on the Municipal Golf Course Management Committee in his hometown of Bloomfield, Conn.
