Birdie on the 18th Hole Clinches the Victory

November 29, 2005

CARLSBAD, Calif. (November 28, 2005) – Quinta, CA.

At age 49, Funk became the oldest winner in the event’s history and set the record for winnings by a rookie. Funk was in his usual self-deprecating mood, as he joked on day one by donning a pink skirt after being out driven by the world’s number one female player.

When it came down to crunch time, Funk got down to business. With 15 skins up for grabs on the 524-yard, par-5 finishing hole, Funk played his steady fairways-and-greens game to secure the win. As usual, his drive split the fairway and his 3-wood approach shot left him with a 30-foot eagle putt. Funk calmly lagged up to a few inches and he tapped in for a birdie that no one could match.

Contributing to Funk’s victory was his ability to hit crisp shots from clean lies in the fairway. Funk is well known for being one of the most accurate drivers in the history of the game. He finished second in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour in 2005 after three years in a row at No. 1.* To win the skins, you must put yourself in good scoring positions and putt well; and Fred did just that. Over the two days Funk hit 14 of 14 fairways and all 18 greens in regulation. Funk played his first competitive event with the TaylorMade Rossa Monza Corza putter in his bag and it paid off handsomely; he made five birdies and an eagle with the new wand.

In Fred’s bag: TaylorMade r5 dual TP driver, TaylorMade 3-wood, TaylorMade rac irons, TaylorMade Rescue Club, TaylorMade rac pitching, sand and lob wedges, TaylorMade Rossa Monza Corza putter. He also wore adidas footwear.
