Two Reading footballers shrugged off the disappointment of their Coca-Cola Cup defeat at Arsenal to cause an upset on the golf course.
Royals skipper Graeme Murty teamed up with American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann to spring a shock over Sandford Springs professionals Dan Keen and Ryan Alexander in a ‘Pro Shop Challenge’ at the picturesque Hampshire course.
Murty and Hahnemann, who both received nine shots from the professionals, eked out a gutsy 2 & 1 win to close out the challenge on the 17th hole.
The high-profile match ends a year-long series of challenges for the Sandford Springs club shop professionals who donate any ‘winnings’ from the fourball matches to club captain David Josey’s national Wooden Spoon charity which helps disadvantaged children.
Keen said: "It was a close match but the Reading boys proved to be just too good on the day. We’ll make sure we set up a rematch so that we get our own back and generate a bit of cash for the Wooden Spoon charity."
