ORLANDO (Dec. 1, 2005) – It was a Classic fundraising day Friday, Nov. 18 at Shingle Creek Golf Club, where the highly-acclaimed golf course and some of its fellow partners of the Rosen Hotels & Resorts group, including the Rosen Centre hotel, helped alumni of Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University raise $35,000 at the Second Annual BCC/FAMU O.C.A.C. Golf Classic.
The event, the most sought after African-American golf classic in the Orlando area, provides scholarship money to the Orange County Alumni Chapters for deserving students attending Bethune-Cookman College (BCC) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). A field of 138 golfers teed it up in the shotgun format.
One of the highlights of the day was the appearance by golfing trail blazer Lee Elder, the first African-American golfer to play in The Masters. Elder praised the Classic’s fundraising efforts and says he hopes to return to the event next year.
"I appreciate being invited to participate in such a worth while event," says Elder. "It was a wonderful showing and we all enjoyed playing the course. I hope to be invited back next year."
Shingle Creek Golf Club was integral in making the day a success. Not only was it the title sponsor of the event, but it also donated a foursome package to the course to the golfer who won Longest Drive honors.
The Rosen Centre, one of Orlando’s premier hotels, also made significant contributions. The Longest Putt winner received 3 day/ 2 night accommodations at the Rosen Centre. The Closest To The Pin winner received dinner for two at The Everglades Restaurant, the Rosen Centre’s signature fine dining restaurant.
"The Harris Rosen Foundation, and its affiliated participating hotel and golf course, are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to this worth while event on behalf of the local alumni chapters of Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University," says Rich Black, Director of the Office of Corporate Initiatives, Rosen Hotels and Resorts. "We know the cost of college tuition continues to rise and we hope our efforts will enable more students to attend these great institutions of higher learning."
"Shingle Creek is gaining a reputation as being a championship golf course, and it’s also gaining renown as championing such organizations as those involved with Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M," says Dave Scott, Director of Golf at Shingle Creek Golf Club. "There’s more to golf than just birdies and bogeys and that was evidentat this event. It was a great day of golf and for golf."
