CARMEL, CA – The second issue of The Journal of the Shivas Irons Society has been honored by the most prestigious design competition in the nation. Communication Arts magazine received over 13,000 entries from around the world, and winners were chosen in categories such as packaging, trademarks, books and editorial to be included in the magazine’s Design Annual, which was published in November. The Journal was selected in the Editorial category, along with GQ magazine, the Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker.
"We’re thrilled by this recognition from one of the most influential design publications in the world," said Steve Cohen, President of the Shivas Irons Society. "We set out to establish a new standard for editorial design in the world of golf periodicals, and the selection of The Journal for the CA Design Annual is confirmation that we’re establishing it."
Turner & Associates (www.turnersf.com) has served as the creative agency for The Journal, with Steve Turner and Tom Ingalls sharing responsibilities as co-creative directors. Al Barkow, former editor of Golf Illustrated and Golf magazines, is editor.
This is not the first award for The Journal. Earlier this year, the Communication Arts Illustration Annual featured an illustration by Jeffrey Decoster that was commissioned for Issue 2. The first issue of The Journal was selected as "Best of Show" in the Mohawk International Design Competition in 2004 and was again a finalist in 2005. It also won the American Institute of Graphic Art 365 award this year.
The Journal, described as "golf’s new voice," is intended as a vehicle for all the creative arts inspired by the game of golf. With contributions from outstanding writers, artists and photographers—new and renowned—it offers a thought provoking editorial perspective on golf’s enduring themes that is designed to add richness to every reader’s experience of the game. Designed and produced to high standards, The Journal occupies a unique niche in today’s golf media marketplace.
The Shivas Irons Society is a California 501(c)3 non-profit organization based on the Monterey Peninsula. It was founded in 1992 with the mission of honoring the mystery and beauty of golf and promoting the game as a vehicle for positive personal and social transformation. In addition to The Journal, the Society hosts a variety of regional, national and international activities for its members as well as a summer golf scholarship program for at-risk youth.
