Other Season-Ending Award Winners Also Announced
Tiger Woods, Dana Quigley and Jason Gore were named the Players of the Year by their fellow competitors on the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour, respectively, it was announced today by PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. All three will receive the Jack Nicklaus Trophy in recognition of their selection.
"No honor is higher than that of being selected by your peers," said Finchem. "Tiger, Dana and Jason had remarkable seasons and earned their recognition despite strong competition from a number of players. I also want to add my congratulations to all of today’s winners."
For Woods it marked his seventh Player of the Year selection in the last nine seasons and caps a season in which he won six times and led the TOUR in earnings with more than $10 million. Among his wins were the Masters and British Open, allowing him to complete a second career Grand Slam before the age of 30.
Woods also won the Arnold Palmer Award for leading the TOUR in earnings and the Bryon Nelson Trophy for having the TOUR’s lowest scoring average (68.66).
For the 58-year old Quigley, the 2005 season was a career year with two victories, five runner-up efforts and a Champions Tour best $2,170,258 in earnings. He racked up 15 Top-10 finishes in 27 starts and finished second in the Charles Schwab Cup race, donating his $500,000 prize to charity.
Quigley, like Woods, will also receive the Arnold Palmer Award. Mark McNulty earned the Byron Nelson Trophy for leading the Champions Tour in scoring average with a 69.41 average.
Gore began the 2005 campaign without much fanfare, but a strong showing in the U.S. Open earned him national attention and his subsequent three consecutive wins on the Nationwide Tour earned him an immediate promotion to the PGA TOUR. His victory shortly thereafter at the 84 LUMBER Classic finished off a dream season that resulted in his selection on the Nationwide Tour.
Sean O’Hair, who won at the John Deere Classic and collected more than $2 million in earnings, was selected as the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year.
The Champions Tour Rookie of the Year is Jay Haas after he won twice on the Tour and finished 15th on the money list in only 10 starts.
Olin Browne, the winner of the Deutsche Bank Championship, was named the PGA TOUR’s Comeback Player of the Year while Peter Jacobsen, a winner of the Ford Senior Players Championship, was the Champions Tour Comeback Player of the Year.
