America’s Best Resort Golf Courses Annual Highlights the Country’s Best Resort Courses
Orlando, Fla., (Dec. 7, 2005) – Golfweek magazine has recently released its first annual issue entitled America’s Best Resort Golf Courses – The Definitive Guide to Golf Travel 2006.
Within Golfweek’s first special issue dedicated to resort Courses, Golfweek honors America’s Best 100 Resort Golf Courses. Golfweek’s No. 1-rated resort golf course is the Tom Doak-designed Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore. Opened in 2001 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Pacific Dunes features rippling fairways, natural bunkers and 60-foot sand dunes. Coming in at No. 2 is Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif., a 1919 design by D. Grant & J Neville, with subsequent input by H. Chandler Egan and Alister MacKenzie and later, Jack Nicklaus, that features spectacular oceanfront holes.
"Courses of Distinction" are also featured in the America’s Best Resort Golf Courses annual. These courses are on the raters’ ballot, and are either too new to be included or are top-notch rated courses that did not appear on the list.
"There’s a curious assumption in the golf industry, that somehow resort courses have to dumb down their design and their appeal in order to attract sufficient volume of vacationers," said Golfweek’s America’s Best Courses program director and architecture editor, Bradley S. Klein. "Well, this list shows there’s nothing farther from the truth. These top-100 resort layouts have three things in common: complex and at times demanding shot options, diverse teeing grounds that accommodate a wide range of clients; and a presumption that knowledgeable golf travelers value attention to detail in the presentation of a golf course."
The resort ratings are derived directly from Golfweek’s annual list of America’s Best Courses, published each March since 1997. America’s Best Golf Courses are ranked by more than 350 raters throughout the country, who judge on the basis of 10 evaluation criteria. Rankings are calculated using a statistically rigorous process.
In recent years, Golfweek has expanded the America’s Best Golf Courses brand beyond the annual issue and has added many additional features. In November, the third annual edition of America’s Best Residential Golf Courses -The Definitive Guide to Luxury Golf Course Living was released. In 2004, Golfweek published a book, based on the America’s Best rankings, entitled A Walk in the Park. Golfweek has also developed monthly editorial features that highlight the ratings process and the standards for evaluation. The criteria for evaluating the golf courses, and the America’s Best Classic, Modern, and a comprehensive state-by-state list, may be found at www.americasbestcourses.com.
