Travel + Leisure Golf magazine editor in chief John Atwood and publisher John Rodenberg presented Pinehurst Resort with its "#1 U.S. Golf Resort in the World" award at a ceremony in its historic clubhouse this week. The magazine polled thousands of readers who ranked Pinehurst first for its total golf experience, including quality of courses, spa facilities, restaurants and accommodations. In winning the award, Pinehurst outranked such notables as Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, the Boulders and Kiawah.
"Our readers’ passion for the game is reflected in this year’s results," said Atwood, "They travel extensively for great golf experiences. As the site of the 2005 U.S. Open, it is no surprise to me that Pinehurst is the top-ranked resort in the U.S."
The award appeared on the cover of the magazine this fall, the first time in its history to feature a destination above a golf or celebrity personality.
