A second edition of the popular book "Building a Practical Golf Facility—A Step-by-Step Guide to Realizing a Dream," has just been published by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). Authored by ASGCA Past President Mike Hurdzan, the book shows those who desire to bring golf into their communities how to go about the planning, design, project management and budgeting process necessary to create a successful project.
Hurdzan is an internationally recognized authority on golf course design, turfgrass and environmental issues. After the positive response to the first version of the book, Hurdzan follows up with new case studies and updated cost analyses. He builds a strong case for affordable, accessible golf and provides direction for those who are interested in pursuing such facilities.
The book, published by the ASGCA Foundation, was made possible with support from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGAA), the PGA TOUR and the United States Golf Association (USGA) Foundation. It features easy-to-follow advice from the early planning stages to the completion of the project. It includes more than 20 in-depth case studies of courses that fit the "practical golf" profile, along with a listing by state of practical golf facilities. Hurdzan emphasizes in the book that practical golf facilities don’t always have to be regulation 18-hole courses. He discusses practice ranges, training centers, three-hole courses, par-3 layouts, nine-hole layouts and executive courses in the book.
