CARLSBAD, Calif., Dec. 21, 2005 â?¦ Golf’s premier fitness and flexibility innovator, Roger Fredericks, is moving to the world-class La Costa Resort and Spa, which will become headquarters for the Roger Fredericks Golf Swing Flexibility Program.
Fredericks is a renowned teaching professional whose study of biomechanics and their relationship to the golf swing has resulted in improving both the health and handicaps of an amazing variety of golfers, from weekend golfers to his most famous students, the legendary Arnold Palmer.
A regular on The Golf Channel, as well as being one of the most talked-about experts in his field, Fredericks is an ideal match with the La Costa wellness philosophy that integrates the challenge of the golf courses, invigorating treatments at the spa and serenity of the acclaimed Chopra Center. The Golf Academy is to begin operations at La Costa in January.
"We are extremely pleased to have someone of Roger Fredericks’ stature become part of our outstanding golf program," said Desi Howe, director of golf at La Costa Resort at Spa, part of the family of KSL Resorts destinations. "He is without peer in his field of golf instruction and fitness. Our guests will have a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge about the golf swing, from the technical and physiological perspectives, in a perfect environment."
At La Costa, the first resort in the United States with a full-service spa when it opened in 1965, the Fredericks program enhances the golf experience at the 36-hole facility, which has won numerous awards — including "Top 100" by GOLF Magazine, "Best Places to Play" by Golf Digest, "Best of Golf" by LINKS Magazine, and "Top Women-Friendly Courses" by Golf for Women. The resort has hosted PGA Tour events for nearly 40 years and is the site of the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play Championship.
"I have always considered La Costa Resort and Spa as a perfect place for my Golf Flexibility Program," said Fredericks, who is a Certified Flexibility Technician as well as a certified member of the PGA of America. "While I have been very fortunate to have a great working arrangements in recent years, this move allows me to create the centralized home I have always dreamed about for my students."
Fredericks, whose list of students includes golf Hall of Fame members Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Donna Caponi and Palmer, as well as Peter Jacobsen and more than 60 pro tour players. Fredericks founded the Del Mar Golf College in San Diego in 1991 before moving to Hawaii in 1995, but most recently has taught from Southern California locations in Rancho Mirage and Rancho Santa Fe. With the recent success of his 30-minute infomercial, "Secrets to Golf Swing Flexibility," which has been featured on The Golf Channel, Fredericks has become one of the golf industry’s most sought-after instructors.
At La Costa, students will begin their programs with a video swing analysis, as Fredericks introduces them to how muscles in their body are required to work in the golf swing. Students then move to La Costa’s fitness center for some simple, but highly effective, flexibility tests. "This is the point where the magic begins," Fredericks said. "Because how well a student performs, or doesn’t perform, in these tests, will have shown up directly in the golf swing mechanics that we just saw on the range."
Fredericks proceeds to put his students through a custom-tailored flexibility program, explaining to them how and when to do the program, and equips them with an all around education on their golf swing and body.
"Every single golfer that I have put on a custom-tailored conditioning program has radically improved their golf games faster and more effectively than the golfers who just took standard lessons," Fredericks said. "The good news/bad news situation is this: the good news is that more and more golfers, and golf instructors are realizing the importance of flexibility and conditioning, the bad news is that I’ve found that not one person in 50 understands what flexibility really is, or how to get it. That goes for golf pros too."
La Costa Resort and Spa is legendary among spa aficionados, professional and amateur golfers, as well as professional and amateur tennis players. The resort this year concluded of a top-to-bottom, multi-million-dollar redevelopment. It now sports a new spa (Spa at La Costa), completely remodeled guest rooms, clubhouse and fitness center, a newly designed ballroom (Costa Del Sol Ballroom) and two freshly conceived restaurants (Legends and BlueFire Bar & Grill). It also is home to the award-winning Chopra Center.
La Costa’s two courses – the North Course and South Course — each feature a classic design that include striking and traditional touches, challenging golfers’ shot-making ability from tee to green. Four sets of tees provide a course length for all players to enjoy. Both courses are routed along the foothills of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego, meandering through 400 scenic acres accented by luxurious homes.
