Competition Gets Early Start on New Year, First Event Set for Jan. 4
RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIF. – It’s b-a-a-c-k! The 22nd annual Kraft Nabisco Championship Senior Putting Competition returns to the desert on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Coachella Senior Center in Coachella. "Tee time" is set for 10 a.m.
Each year, the free putting competition for adults 55 and older offers participants the chance to win tickets to the Kraft Nabisco Championship LPGA golf tournament in March as well as numerous other prizes. As in years past, the 2006 putting competition will be staged at several locations throughout the Coachella Valley with the finalists having a chance to compete for the grand prize at the "Championship Putt-off." This year’s Putt-off is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, at Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs at 11 a.m. A final preliminary round will be held prior to the Putt-off at 9:30 a.m.
Tamra Borson, marketing and advertising manager for the Kraft Nabisco Championship, said that participants can compete in as many preliminary contests as they want during the five-week competition.
"This is a fun, friendly competition and we encourage golfers and non-golfers alike to come out and give it a try," Borson said. "Every participant will receive one daily grounds ticket to the Kraft Nabisco Championship. In addition, anyone who competes will have a chance to enter a drawing for a daily prize at each preliminary event."
Borson added that all seniors who compete in the putting competition will also qualify for a grand prize drawing for a 2006 Kraft Nabisco Championship tournament package. The package includes two VIP Clubhouse badges, two 18th green skybox passes good for Tuesday through Friday of Tournament Week, and one VIP parking pass for the tournament. The grand prize drawing will be held at the Championship Putt-off.
Kraft Nabisco Championship also announced the return of its popular "Senior Appreciation Days" during Tournament Week, set for March 27-April 2, 2006, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Senior Appreciation Days offer free admission for adults 55 and over during both days of the tournament’s Celebrity Pro-Am. The 2006 Pro-Am is scheduled for Tuesday, March 28, and Wednesday, March 29, during Tournament Week and will be played on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course and Arnold Palmer Course.
The Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first "major" tournament of the year on the LPGA Tour, celebrates its 35th anniversary this year at Mission Hills Country Club. Defending champion Annika Sorenstam will attempt an unprecedented fourth win at this year’s tournament, as well as the first leg of the LPGA Grand Slam. Other top competitors scheduled to appear include Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr and Christina Kim.
