Doral, FL – The South Florida Golf Foundation announced today that former Doral champion Ernie Els will return to play at the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral. Els is currently 5th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
"The addition of Ernie Els makes this year’s event even more compelling," said Eddie Carbone, executive director of the Ford Championship at Doral. "The 2002 event featured a battle between Tiger and Ernie that was almost as memorable as last year’s epic duel."
Ernie Els, of Johannesburg, South Africa, was a winner at Doral in 2002. Els is returning to take on the Blue Monster for the first time since winning his title. He is a two-time U.S. Open Champion and won his last major at Muirfield, Scotland to claim the 2002 British Open.
Ernie Els started strong in 2005. He opened the year with three consecutive top ten finishes for just the second time in his 12 years on the PGA TOUR. Els then went on to win four tournaments including the Dubai Desert Classic, the Qatar Masters and the BMW Asian Open. Els saw his season shortened due to a knee injury sustained just after the British Open. He returned to form at the end of 2005 to win the dunhill championship in his native South Africa.
