Loren Roberts continued his torrid start to the 2006 season, winning the Turtle Bay Championship and building a commanding early lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. With consecutive victories in Hawaii, Roberts has 515 points, 285 more than Don Pooley, who sits alone in second place. The 2005 Charles Schwab Cup Champion, Tom Watson, is currently third with 167 points. Jay Haas and Scott Simpson round out the top five.
The Charles Schwab Cup enjoyed one of its most exciting finishes in recent memory in 2005. Watson used a final round 8-under-par 64 to erase a six-shot deficit and win the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The victory vaulted Watson ahead of Dana Quigley, who led the Charles Schwab Cup for 17 consecutive weeks and 19 weeks overall, and earned him his second Charles Schwab Cup (2003, 2005). In all, 13 players came to Sonoma Golf Club with a chance to take home the Cup.

The Charles Schwab Cup is a season-long points program designed to recognize the Tour’s leading player. The program rewards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all 29 official Charles Schwab Cup events. Points are awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties and are based on the money distribution for each tournament, with every $1,000 earned being the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point. Points are doubled at the Champions Tour’s five major championships and the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
The winner of the 2006 Charles Schwab Cup will earn a $1 million annuity.
The second through fifth-place finishers earn annuities of $500,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000, respectively, from the $2.1 million bonus program.
The previous winners in the competition are Allen Doyle (2001), Hale Irwin (2002 and 2004) and Tom Watson (2003 and 2005).
