ATLANTA – Glenn Cornell of Dacula was elected president of the Georgia State Golf Association for a second one-year term, highlighting the Association’s recent 2006 Annual Meeting at Cherokee Town Club in Atlanta.
Cornell, a member of Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, was president of the Georgia State Golf Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the GSGA, from 1994-1996, then was elected to the GSGA Board of Directors in 1998 and to its Executive Committee in 1999. He served as secretary-treasurer in 2000-2001 and was president-elect from 2002-2004.
A native of White County, Georgia, Cornell attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia, where he was a three-year letterman in baseball and basketball and graduated in 1962 with a degree in business and accounting. He is also a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma and the Emory University Advanced Management Program.
Cornell spent 42 years in the areas of business, economic development and government relations in Georgia. Most recently, he served as Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue’s commissioner of the Department of Economic Development until his retirement in July of 2004. This followed 27 years as a senior member of Bank of America’s Georgia management team.
Among his leadership roles in business and community activities, he was chairman of the board of Duluth First United Methodist Church, vice chairman of Community Schools of Georgia, member of the Board of Directors of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Chamber of Commerce and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of Berry College.
His life-long interest in sports activities includes service as past president of the Atlanta Athletic Club, past chairman and current Board member of the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Atlanta Sports Council, and Board membership of the Atlanta Charity Championship Hosted by Nancy Lopez and the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland.
Cornell has been married to the former Jena Nix for 44 years and they have two children, Kathy and Bill, each of whom also has a daughter and a son. They have lived in Gwinnett County for more than 40 years.
Seth Knight III of Green Island Country Club in Columbus was elected for a second one-year term as president-elect. He will serve in this capacity and then become president upon the conclusion of Cornell’s service. Knight is a partner in Knight-Rawls, Inc., an insurance agency in Columbus specializing in benefit planning. He is also a past president of Green Island and has competed in several U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur and British Amateur championships.
Elected to serve a one-year term as secretary-treasurer is John Glenn of Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville.
Two new members were elected to three-year terms on the Executive Committee: Greg Butterfield of Smyrna and The Frog Golf Club at the Georgian in Villa Rica and Robert F. Fowler of Capital City Club in Atlanta. Both are active as rules officials at GSGA competitions. Butterfield serves on the Membership Committee and Fowler has been active on the Finance Committee and serves as a course rater.
Other Executive Committee members who will continue in their current terms during 2006 are Chris Cupit of Alpharetta (Rivermont Golf and Country Club), Sissi Gann of Kathleen (Houston Lake Country Club in Perry), Becky Royer of Canton (BridgeMill Athletic Club) and Dennis Terry of Athens (Athens Country Club).
W. Richard Wilson of Columbus (Country Club of Columbus) continues as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee as immediate past president while Cornell is president.
A new ex-officio member of the Executive Committee is John McGoogan of Capital City Club in Atlanta. He has assumed the presidency of the Georgia State Golf Foundation upon the death in 2005 of former president Richard Franklin of Atlanta (Cherokee Town and Country Club).
William B. Brown of Atlanta Country Club in Marietta was re-appointed the Association’s general counsel.
Two individuals completed six years of service and have retired from the Executive Committee: John Companiotte of Atlanta (Atlanta Athletic Club) and G. Alan Katz of Marietta (Indian Hills Country Club). Both will remain active with the Association as Senior Directors.
Three new members of the Association’s Board of Directors were elected at the annual meeting: Bill Cowles of Lilburn (Berkeley Hills Country Club), Carol Crosby of Savannah (The Landings Club) and Linda Lee of Alpharetta (TPC at Sugarloaf).
Three members of the Board of Directors have been named Senior Directors after serving 10 years on the Board: John Haupt of Savannah (Savannah Golf Club), W.A. Hines of College Park (Golfer’s Club at Fort McPherson) and Betty Rich of Villa Rica (Sunset Hills Country Club).
The management of the Georgia State Golf Association is vested in its Board of Directors. The Board meets annually to review the activity of the Association, transact any business and elect a new slate of officers and directors. The GSGA Executive Committee, which includes the Officers, meets quarterly to manage the business affairs of the Association between annual meetings.
