Alpharetta, GA — Incoming United States Golf Association President Walter Driver has accepted an invitation to serve as Honorary Captain for the 2006 Georgia Cup Match at The Golf Club of Georgia March 29.
In its ninth year, the Georgia Cup annually brings together the reigning United States and British Amateur champions in an 18-hole match preceding their appearance in the Masters.
This year’s Georgia Cup Match for the first time will feature two European competitors — United States Amateur champion Edoardo Molinari of Italy and Ireland’s Brian McElhinney, the British Amateur champion — on The Golf Club of Georgia’s award-winning Lakeside Course.
Driver, 60, who succeeds Fred Ridley as USGA president, will be inducted at the organization’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta Feb. 4.
Chairman-Southeast for the investment banking firm of Goldman, Sachs & Co., in Atlanta, Driver has served the last four years as USGA vice-president.
The Georgia Cup, which is tied at 4-4 following U.S. Amateur champion Ryan Moore’s 2 and 1 win over Scotland’s Stuart Wilson in 2005, presents a unique opportunity for galleries. In the spirit and intimacy of the Walker Cup Matches, fans can walk with the players, unhindered by gallery ropes.
The Georgia Cup Match is open to the public, with proceeds donated to the Yates Scholarship Fund of the Georgia State Golf Foundation, the charitable branch of the Georgia State Golf Association.
