Doral, FL – The South Florida Golf Foundation announced today that the Sergio Garcia has committed to play in the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral. It has also been announced that former Florida Gator Camilo Villegas has received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the tournament.
"Having such an established star as Sergio at the Ford Championship at Doral makes this year’s event one of the strongest in golf," said Eddie Carbone, executive director of the Ford Championship at Doral. "Camilo Villegas is a rising star on the PGA TOUR and his presence continues to add international flair to the tournament."
Sergio Garcia, from Borriol, Spain, is currently 6th on the Official World Gold Rankings. Garcia is coming off a 2005 season in which he won his 6th PGA TOUR event at the Booz Allen Classic. Garcia also grabbed a victory on the European PGA TOUR at the Omega European Masters as well as two top-10 finishes at the U.S. Open and the British Open. Garcia’s victory at the Booz Allen Classic made him only the third person since 1970 to earn six wins by the age of 25. He shares that company with Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
Camilo Villegas is starting his rookie season on the PGA TOUR. Villegas, known locally as a Gator, is a native of Columbia. Villegas was a four time All-American earning first team honors in 2001, 2002 and 2004 as well as a NCAA Academic All-American in 2002 and 2003 at the University of Florida. Villegas is a graduate of the Nationwide Tour, where he finished 2005 13th on the money list. Camilo Villegas was the recipient of a sponsor’s exemption to the Ford Championship at Doral in 2005.
