WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Feb. 15, 2006 – While the world may be focused on the champions of the Winter Olympic Games, Colonial Williamsburg has a Gold Medal of its own to celebrate, bestowed by GOLF Magazine in the bi-annual ranking of golf resorts in the United States. And as a winner of 5 Star recognition by Golf Digest, Colonial Williamsburg has joined an even more elite group of eight resorts in the nation to hold both distinctions.
The recent honor, to be published in the March issue of GOLF (available this week), is based on feedback from readers and opinions of the magazine’s experts, who rated the overall luxury experience and accommodations, services, meals and ambiance.
"Our staff is dedicated to maintaining a level of excellence that is expected at Colonial Williamsburg," said John Hallowell, president, Colonial Williamsburg Company Hospitality Group. "It is an honor and gratifying as well to see our dedication to service and quality results in guests enjoying their experiences at Colonial Williamsburg, whether on the golf courses, in our restaurants or when using our other amenities."
Colonial Williamsburg is the nation’s largest outdoor living history museum with its 301-acre Historic Area, the restored 18th-century capital of Virginia. Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club encompasses the Gold and Spotswood Courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and the Green Course designed by his son, Rees Jones.
The elegant Williamsburg Inn, built in 1937 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., completed an extensive renovation in 2001 and is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Hotels of America and the Leading Small Hotels of the World. During the renovation, a team of historians, curators and interior designers from Colonial Williamsburg worked for several years on the project to ensure that the updated facility remained true in character to Rockefeller’s original intent of creating a comfortable, country inn. A luxury spa and state-of-the-art health evaluation center joined the foundation’s lineup of gracious offerings by 2005.
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a not-for-profit educational institution and its subsidiary, the Colonial Williamsburg Company, operates a variety of hospitality businesses including the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge, Woodlands Hotel & Suites and 28 individual Colonial Houses. Also on site are two conference centers, the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club and four historic dining taverns. Colonial Williamsburg is located 150 miles south of Washington D.C., off Interstate 64.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of GOLF awarding its Gold Medal and Silver Medal honors, creating one of the most recognized and authoritative rankings of American golf resorts.
