Lansing, Mich. (February 24, 2006)- The World’s Largest Golf Flag was raised at the Michigan Capitol Building yesterday. The flag was manufactured to symbolize Michigan’s standing as the top golf state in the country and the vital role golf plays in Michigan’s tourism economy.
The joint promotion from Travel Michigan and Citadel Broadcasting of Lansing also included a putting contest on the Capitol grounds in 30-degree weather. Measuring 5.5′ high and 10′ wide, the flag has been entered as a new category for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Event sponsors included Crystal Mountain Resort, Bay Mills Resort and Casino, Hawk Hollow Properties and The Michigan PGA. The flag was manufactured by St. Andrews Products through Marc Heistand and Michigan Golf Sales.
Michigan boasts over 850 public golf courses, one of the most by any state in the nation. Golf travelers contribute nearly $1 billion annually to the state’s economy.
