Expansion Project Includes New Layout, Superior Short Game Area
CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 27, 2006â?¦ More than doubling the size of its existing practice range, La Costa Resort and Spa, part of the family of KSL Resorts destinations, has begun a $1.5 million remodeling project that this spring will result in a completely redesigned facility.
"This will be a tremendous addition to what already is a world-class golf facility," said Desi Howe, La Costa’s director of golf. "With the additional space and overall modernization of everything from the greens to the netting, our new practice area will enhance the golf experience at La Costa and allow us to expand service for our members and guests."
While work has begun on what will become the new west side of the practice facility, the existing range will not close for the remodel until Feb. 28. Play will not be interrupted during the project, which is scheduled for completion in May.
The project includes expanding from 4.5 acres to 10 acres of overall space, with new sod, drainage and irrigation. There are to be two distinct "wings" for hitting, at the west and east ends of the facility, with the putting and chipping greens conveniently placed in between. Raised target greens are to be designed into appropriate distances and the enclosure is to get new netting all around. The new short-game area is to feature two greens and bunkering. An attractive, landscaped entrance to the practice area and more convenient golf cart parking near the hitting spaces are part of the improvements.
This is the latest in a series of significant changes at La Costa. Legendary among spa aficionados, professional and amateur golfers, as well as professional and amateur tennis players, the resort last year concluded of a top-to-bottom, multi-million-dollar redevelopment. It now sports a new spa (Spa at La Costa), completely remodeled guest rooms, a recently built Clubhouse and fitness center, a newly designed ballroom (Costa Del Sol Ballroom), and two freshly conceived restaurants (Legends and BlueFire Bar & Grill). It also is home to the world-renowned Chopra Center.
La Costa’s two courses – the North Course and South Course — each feature a classic design that include striking and traditional touches, challenging golfers’ shot-making ability from tee to green. Four sets of tees provide a course length for all players to enjoy. Both courses are snuggled into the foothills of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego, meandering through 400 scenic acres accented by luxurious homes.
