(Scottsdale, AZ., Feb. 27, 2006) – Andrew Magee underwent successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his left kidney at the Cleveland (Ohio) Clinic Feb. 18. Dr. Indebir Gill performed the operation and said that the tumor and 15 percent of the kidney was removed "with excellent margins," and that no radiation or chemotherapy procedures would be needed. Magee is in good spirits and recovering at his Arizona home.
Magee had an MRI on a bothersome hip in Arizona on Jan. 27 and the exam revealed the small tumor. Dr. Bill Ruschhaupt, Chief of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic was able to expedite Magee’s admission and surgery. Dr. Gill called the discovery of the tumor "serendipitous," since it was coincidental and caught the tumor at a very early stage.
"I’m very fortunate that we caught this early and very thankful for the tremendous care I’ve gotten from Dr. Ruschhaupt and Dr. Gill at the Cleveland Clinic," said Magee. "I’m also grateful the support I’ve gotten from my fellow pros throughout this ordeal."
Magee, 43, is cautiously optimistic that he’ll be able to return to play or at least practice in about six weeks. He joined the PGA TOUR in 1985 and has four wins, the last coming at the 1994 Northern Telecom Open. Exempt in 125-150 category this year, Magee made the cut at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and FBR Open before missing it at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
