SUNRIVER, Ore., Feb; 28, 2006 — For the third consecutive time, Sunriver Resort is one of 25 destinations to earn GOLF Magazine’s prestigious "Gold Medal" ranking, symbolic of one of America’s best golf resorts. In the bi-annual rankings released in the publication’s March issue, this Destination Hotels & Resorts property again joins a prominent list featuring U.S. properties from Pebble Beach to Pinehurst.
"Sunriver is not a couch spud’s resort," GOLF Magazine’s Joe Passov writes of Sunriver Resort, which boasts 54 holes of championship golf. "You can ski and play golf on the same day. The best of three courses is Crosswater, with par 5s longer than the buffet line at an Overeaters Anonymous convention. When you’re done there, ride a canoe down the Deschutes River."
The rankings are based on a combination of input from GOLF Magazine’s panel of experts as well as its readers. Resorts are ranked on their golf, service and amenities, as well as the overall luxury of the experience. Sunriver Resort was a "Gold Medal Resort" in 2002 and 2004.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of GOLF awarding its Gold Medal and Silver Medal honors, creating one of the most recognized and authoritative rankings of American golf resorts.
The significance of the GOLF Magazine honor is not lost on management.
"All we have to do is look around at the other 24 resorts that received Gold Medal status and know that we are in esteemed company," said Tom Luersen, vice president and managing partner, Sunriver Resort.
"These resorts are the best of the best," Luersen said. "And it is particularly gratifying to receive this honor because it is a result of people who have experienced all that we have to offer here.
"It is the most recent honor to be bestowed on Sunriver Resort, which earlier this year was named one of Condé Nast Traveler’s "Top 50 Resorts" in its recent ski poll and one of the country’s "Top 10 Getaways for Family Togetherness" by Family Travel Forum.
In addition to golf, Sunriver Resort boasts 28 tennis courts, 35 miles of paved bike paths, three swimming complexes, horseback riding, an indoor racquet club, canoeing and kayaking, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, shopping village and nature center.
A total of 250 guest rooms — Lodge Village rooms and suites plus the River Lodges, comprised of four two-story buildings that house 33 deluxe rooms — are augmented by more than 400 vacation rental properties, featuring private homes and condominiums alike.
Framing the 3,800 acres of the Resort are the Cascade Mountains, Deschutes River, towering pines and wide-open wilderness.
