42,000 Spectators Attend Sunday’s Final Round, Shattering Record Attendance Mark of 2005
Miami, Florida, March 5, 2006 â?¦ On the heels of 2005’s record-setting attendance of 120,000 spectators, the South Florida Golf Foundation today reported that the total attendance for the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral reached 145,000, shattering the previous mark, as Floridians turned-out in mass to see Tiger Woods successfully defend his title at Doral Golf Resort & Spa, in Miami.
The record attendance is 25,000 higher than 2005, when the Ford Championship at Doral set a 44-year record with 120,000 spectators turning out to watch Tiger Woods beat Phil Mickelson in the "Duel at Doral."
With Woods defending his 2005 Ford Championship at Doral title, while competing against a field made up of 10 of the top 11 players on the Official World Golf Ranking, the South Florida Golf Foundation enhanced all facets of its operations and logistics to accommodate the additional 25,000 spectators.
"Given the depth of the field, and knowing that Tiger’s title defense would significantly spike attendance, we went to great lengths to ensure that we could successfully manage the massive crowds coming out to Doral," said Eddie Carbone, Executive Director, South Florida Golf Foundation. "To have 265,000 golf fans turn out over a two-year period, for what has become one of the premiere events on the PGA TOUR, is a testament to just how big of a family event this tournament has become in South Florida."
The seven-day attendance total for the 2006 Ford Championship at Doral, February 27-March 5, include: 2,000 for Monday, 6,000 for Tuesday, 12,500 for Wednesday, 20,000 for Thursday, 25,500 for Friday, 37,000 for Saturday and 42,000 for Sunday.
