LEWISTON, Mich. (March 7, 2006) – Don White, a well-known member of the Northern Michigan golf community, has been named PGA Director of Golf at Garland resort. White will oversee the entire golf operation including an extended staff of nearly 80 people.
"We are excited to have an individual with the experience of Don White join the Garland team," said Barry Owens-President of Garland Resort. "The position here at Garland has a rich and growing tradition. We feel Don offers a perfect combination of private club and resort experience while we continue to build our private membership along with maintaining ourselves as a top resort destination."
A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., White attended the University of Michigan before turning professional in 1977. He has been a member of the PGA of America since 1983.
Don White began his golf career working for several established private clubs such as Travis Pointe and Barton Hills in Michigan as well as Boca Grove Plantation in Florida. His career in Northern Michigan began by working for Rick Smith at Treetops Resort. He followed that by working for popular facilities such as Michaywe and Marsh Ridge Resort.
"I’m thrilled to be part of a growing resort destination such as Garland. Garland is known nationwide and with its current development success and private membership buildup, it is the opportunity of a lifetime for me", said White. "I am looking forward to growing with Garland and providing both the public and the members a quality resort and club experience."
It all began in 1951 when Herman Otto, a German-born American businessman, built a nine-hole golf course for family, friends, and employees of his Detroit-based company, Garland Manufacturing. In the early 60s, Garland opened to the public. Today, there is a total of 72 beautiful holes, all designed by Herman’s son and the current owner, Ron Otto.
When it comes to golf, Garland resort’s four courses overflow with beauty, diversity, and wildlife, making this golf experience much like a relaxing nature walk. The courses, Swampfire, Monarch, Reflections, and Fountains, all operate out of the same golf shop and offer a beautiful parkland setting and challenges for all levels of golfers. The courses weave through more than 3,500 acres of the state’s most scenic forests, lakes and streams.
Garland resort has long been known for its special Northern Michigan ambiance. What has emerged is Michigan’s most beautiful resort, which features a lodge built of huge pines and a collection of charming villas and real estate opportunities. Frequent glimpses of whitetail deer, wild turkey, fox and other woodland game are all part of the Garland experience. Garland is proud to be one of the few areas in the state of Michigan where nesting bald eagles can be seen.
