Celebrities to Descend on Golf Course and New Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel During Grand Opening Month Sept. 2006
ORLANDO (March 9, 2006) – Rosen Shingle Creek regards itself as a knockout of a facility, so it’s only natural that it’s celebrating its grand opening this September in a knock out of a way – thanks, in part, to Lucille, Shaquille O’Neal and family.
Rosen Shingle Creek will host the inaugural "Shaq’s Mama Said Knock You Out" Celebrity Charity Golf Tournament on September 15. Like O’Neal’s favorite shot, it’s an event that will be a great big SLAM DUNK!
Shaquille O’Neal leads an all-star list of sports celebrities expected to attend and support the cause. Charles Barkley, who was named one of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, is also expected to be there as is former Orlando Magic star Dennis Scott.
The event, which has an 8 a.m. shotgun start, is the first golf tournament to be part of the "Shaq’s Momma Said Knock You Out" charity weekend. All money raised will go to the Odessa Chambliss "Quality of Life Fund" to provide nursing scholarships. The Fund is named in honor of Lucille O’Neal’s mother and Shaquille O’Neal’s grandmother, Odessa Chambliss, who worked for over 16 years in the nursing profession and who passed away in 1996. Last year, the weekend raised $300,000 for the Fund, even without the benefit of the golf tournament.
"It is a pleasure to be able to hold our first golf tournament at such a top-notch location as Shingle Creek Golf Club and to be part of the opening month celebration of the Rosen Shingle Creek. It’s a beautiful golf course that I know our guests and patrons will be excited to play," says Lucille O’Neal, Shaq’s mother and event organizer. "It should be an outstanding day of both golf and entertainment. We hope to raise a lot of money for the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund."
"Shaquille O’Neal is an institution in the Orlando area from his days of playing for the Magic, so it’s an honor to be able to host anything that’s associated with him," says Dave Scott, Director of Golf at Shingle Creek Golf Club. "We think it speaks volumes about us that he and his mother have chosen Rosen Shingle Creek as the venue for this event. We will do everything possible to make sure it’s an impeccable day, from the moment the first guest arrives until the last person says ‘Good night’."
While eyes will naturally focus on the 7-foot-1 Shaq, as well as his friends and guests, they will also be on Shingle Creek’s magnificent 1,500 room luxury hotel that is the centerpiece of the Grand Opening. The hotel is not only perfect for a fine stay in the entertainment-laden Orlando area, but also for business meetings and the like. It’s the crowning addition to a complex that has garnered many accolades since it opened less than three years ago.
