(Kingsley, Mich.) Familiarity breeds praise as far as the five-year-old Kingsley Club in northern Michigan is concerned. The more it is played and known nationally, the more it is recognized. Golfweek, the game’s weekly newsmagazine, raised The Kingsley Club to 19th place in its March 11 issue. In fact, Golfweek makes the course the highest ranked Modern course in Michigan.
"It’s a wonderful ranking and it’s a very special designation," said Ed Walker, who co-founded The Kingsley Club on land he discovered virtually in his own back yard just south of Traverse City. "We’re proud the ranking speaks to more than the design of the golf course but also to the traditional golf experience and ambience of The Kingsley Club. We want to share this special experience with fellow golfers seeking a private club that celebrates the essence of the game and its traditions."
Mike DeVries, an Alister Mackenzie devotee, who also lives in Traverse City, designed The Kingsley Club. DeVries is rapidly becoming one of the premier designers among the new minimalists. "It’s exciting," DeVries said of the higher ranking. "I think The Kingsley Club came in under the radar. It isn’t near a big ocean and didn’t have a lot of marketing but people are discovering it and seeing the overall quality, especially the more they play it.
In addition to the Golfweek ranking, The Kingsley Club drew praise from LINKS Magazine in its March issue. Jack Purcell, President and Publisher wrote, "This heathland style layout in Northern Michigan is nothing short of phenomenal—it’s the closest thing I’ve experienced in America to an inland Scottish or Irish course." George Peper, who started GOLF Magazine’s 100 Best Courses in the World 27 years ago, said that with its pedigree "The Kingsley Club seems destined to move up the charts." Similar praise came from Ron Whitten, course critic at Golf Digest, when he wrote, "The most fun I had playing golf in 2002 was at The Kingsley Club."
