LIMERICK, Pa. (March 13, 2006) – Despite what amounted to little more than a soft opening last year, Raven’s Claw GC debuted at No. 8 on Golfweek’s list of the best daily fee and resort golf courses in Pennsylvania.
Raven’s Claw, designed by Plymouth Meeting-based golf course architect Ed Shearon, did not have all phases of the project – golf course, practice facility and clubhouse – open until Fall of 2005. From the outset, the layout has been heralded as one of the most interesting, challenging and beautiful in the state. Now, after a year of grow-in, the course conditions also reach the same level of superiority.
"We really planned to fully debut the course this year," explained Shearon, who also designed award-winning courses at RiverWinds (West Deptford Township, N.J.) and Vineyard Golf at Renault Winery (near Atlantic City). "To get this kind of acclaim after the minimal exposure the course got last year is quite a compliment."
Raven’s Claw was designed in the classic style of architecture that dominates the Philadelphia golf scene. With strategic principles governing play on most of the holes, the course immediately became a favorite of the competitive players as well as casual golfers.
In addition, Raven’s Claw was created through a sympathetic master plan with builders Dewey Homes and Orleans Homes, allowing for the course to be built at a reasonable cost. The end result is a course that looks like an upscale $100-plus layout but can be played by the public golfer for $55 during the week and $69 on weekends (including cart and range balls).
"We firmly believe that upscale, affordable courses such as Raven’s Claw represent the future of golf," stressed Shearon. "Today’s golfer has sophisticated tastes but is also conscious of a good golf value. That was our goal from the beginning at Raven’s Claw."
