Mission Viejo, Calif. (March 16, 2006) — Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club was awarded the Best New Clubhouse Under 20,000 Square Feet from Golf Inc magazine. Judging was based on a combination of efficiency of design, visual appeal and how well the finished product meshed with the developer’s goals and was conducted by industry experts.
"It is an honor for our club to receive this award," Matthew Donovan, the Arroyo Trabuco’s general manager said. "We are a public facility that strives to offer a private club feel. The clubhouse design and functionality is a large part of that effort and this recognition reinforces our goal of providing a memorable experience for the golfer."
The architect on the project was Melzer Deckett & Ruder Architects and RW Art & Design was charged with the interior design.
Offering dramatic views of the golf course and nearby mountains, the exterior is designed to resemble and early California ranch homestead and futures four separate structures. Outdoor areas between the buildings are designed for use as circulation areas, for lounging and overflow seating. The architecture reflects a simple massing of structures, using a variety of gable roof elements, sitting porches, fire pits and outdoor arcades.
"Separate buildings are nicely connected via walkways, extension and patios," according to Gregg Lindquist one of the judges. "It’s great for banquets and weddings."
While the connection between the buildings provides for easy access, one of the more unique features of the clubhouse and banquet facility, which features a private outdoor wedding area, is separate entrances and parking lots that provide a natural spacing and flow of movement between the golfer and other social functions.
"Designers did a good job integrating the ranch theme into the budding," added judge Amy Stevens. "The landscaped garden areas allow for a larger use of the facilities."
PGA Tour pro Tom Lehman and noted golf course architect, Casey O’Callaghan designed the 18-hole championship golf course. The par 72, 7,011-yard layout is a premiere daily fee, public golf facility and has been designed with five sets of tees per hole, playing from 5,045 to 7,011 yards. Arroyo Trabuco is one of a handful of courses in Southern California with no homes on the golf course. The facility has a park-like environmental setting traversing Trabuco Creek and the Ladera Open Space Reserve. Additionally, as part of the development of the course, over 200-acres of open space were dedicated to the County of Orange for an extension of O’Neill Regional Park.
Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club was developed and is owned by DMB San Juan Golf Associates, LLC. The company was formed in 2000 with a partnership between DMB Consolidated Holdings, Scottsdale, Arizona and members of the O’Neill/Moiso family and other non-family associates. Donovan Bros. Golf, LLC, manages the club.
