PACIFIC GROVE, Calif., March 28, 2006 â?¦ A new clubhouse, complete with an upscale restaurant and relaxing ocean view, is the centerpiece of a $4 million renovation at Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course. The completion of the 19-month project gives the famed coastline links a graciously appointed venue designed with both the casual golfer and special groups in mind.
The aptly named Point Pinos Grill – operated by Chris D’Amelio, of the popular Red House Cafe in downtown Pacific Grove – is ideal for breakfast, lunch and foursomes. Private accommodations are available in the Tournament Room, which seats 48 but can be easily connected with the main dining room, via the surrounding outdoor patio balcony.
Designed by architect Ken Scates of Monterey-based HGHB, a paved courtyard area separates the clubhouse from the golf shop. From there, golfers are only steps from the refurbished first tee – the only part of the golf course that was affected by the construction – and a new, larger practice green that complements the second practice area. The new cart garage is sunken beneath the clubhouse.
Despite the golf facility’s significant transformation, some special traditions were maintained, including the personal club storage service still available just as it has been for decades. And inside the clubhouse, a classic photo gallery chronicles the various eras of the golf course.
The new facility is the third clubhouse in the history of the famed local links, which was built in 1932 by Jack Neville and H. Chandler Egan, whose more famous handiwork is a few minutes away: the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Pacific Grove recently was named a "personal favorite" by the staff of Golfweek magazine, in the publication’s annual "America’s Best" edition, noting "the purest links golf to be found anywhere in the Western United States."
