MIAMI – In November 2005, Strategic Shaft Technologies, LC, filed lawsuits in Canada and the United States against Elta Golf, Inc. and Elta Co., Ltd., Canadian retailers of golf clubs and equipment, for infringement of SST’s trademarks, including SST-PURE® and SST-PUREd®, and for wrongfully passing-off golf shafts as having been PUREdâ?¢ under SST’s patented and proprietary processes. In January and March 2006, a Canadian court issued interim injunctions prohibiting Elta from using SST’s trademarks in any form or fashion. The Canadian court has also ordered Elta to account for its sales and inventory of golf shafts sold under SST’s PUREâ?¢ and PUREdâ?¢ trademarks.
Dick Weiss, SST’s founder and the inventor of many patents covering the SST’s methods of orienting golf shafts, was "gratified" by the action taken by the Canadian court. "SST will continue to police its trademark and patent rights to protect the golfing public from purveyors of phony or inferior golf shaft alignment services who wrongfully use SST’s name or its patents," Weiss said.
Using proprietary computer software and sensitive data-acquisition sensors, the SST PURE shaft alignment process analyzes the structural irregularities that exist to some degree in every golf shaft and locates the shaft’s most stable orientation. By assembling the club with the shaft in its PURE orientation, off-line bending and twisting of the shaft are minimized and impact repeatability on the center of the clubface by the golfer improves up to 51 percent. The process can be performed on existing clubs, new clubs or new shafts – steel or graphite – from most major manufacturers.
