TPC of Myrtle Beach Is First Myrtle Beach Golf Course to Earn Five-Star Ranking
April 26, 2006, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The TPC of Myrtle Beach was selected as a five-star golf course in Golf Digest’s 2006 "Best Places to Play" ranking in the May issue. The "Best Places to Play" rankings are determined by more than 20,000 Golf Digest readers who provide the magazine with ratings on conditions, pace of play, service, value and the overall golf experience at public and resort courses throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The TPC of Myrtle Beach is the first Myrtle Beach course to earn five stars in Golf Digest’s ranking which began in 1963. According to Golf Digest, a five-star ranking means "Golf at its absolute best. Pay any price to play at least once in your life." Other Grand Strand courses have earned the magazine’s 4 ½ star-ranking ("Outstanding. Plan your vacation around it").
The TPC of Myrtle Beach joins five other golf courses making their debut this year as a Golf Digest five-star facility in the magazine’s bi-annual ranking. Only 17 courses were named to the prestigious five-star list and all are located in the United States. Other courses named include Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort’s Bandon and Pacific Courses, Bethpage State Park Golf Course, Big Creek Golf & Country Club, Blackwolf Run, Bulle Rock, Kiawah Island Ocean Course, Little Mountain Country Club, Madden’s on Gull Lake, Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club-No. 2, Spyglass Golf Course, Whistling Straits Golf Club and Woodland Hills Golf Course. TPC of Myrtle Beach and Kiawah Island Ocean Course were the only South Carolina courses named to the list.
"It is an honor to have TPC of Myrtle Beach included among such an esteemed list of golf courses," said Bill Golden, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s vice-president and director of marketing. "Golf Digest’s five-star list is the ‘cream of the crop’ for golf in our country and further exemplifies the quality of golf that can be played along the Grand Strand."
In 2005, TPC of Myrtle Beach was selected as the "South Carolina Golf Course of the Year" by the South Carolina Area Golf Course Owners Association (SCAGCOA) after being named as the "Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year" earlier during the year. Other TPC honors include selection by Golf Digest as one of "Myrtle Beach’s Top 50 Golf Courses." In 2004, Golfweek named TPC as one of its "Top 10 South Carolina Public Golf Courses." In 1999, TPC was recognized by both GOLF Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the "Top 10 Best Upscale Public Golf Courses" in America.
"We are honored to be recognized with Golf Digest’s highest ranking," said Chip Smith, one of the new owners of the TPC of Myrtle Beach. "Not only are we happy for TPC of Myrtle Beach but also for the Tournament Players Club brand and for the Myrtle Beach golf community. There are many great courses in Myrtle Beach and we hope this award will bring more recognition to both the TPC and our Grand Strand area."
