May 3, 2006, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday is accepting entries for the seventh annual Veterans Golf Classic through Friday, May 12. The 54-hole tournament is slated for May 22 – May 24, 2006, on 15 of the Grand Strand’s finest golf courses. More than 500 golfers from across the United States have already registered for the tournament which honors all current and former members of the military.
Thirty-five states, and the District of Columbia, will be represented including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
The two-person team event features a different format each day with golfers flighted based on their combined team handicap. To be eligible for the tournament, at least one team member must be a Veteran or active member of the military. Entry into the Veterans Golf Classic is $250 and includes three rounds of golf, nightly activities for participants and a guest, awards, prizes and a chance to help win "The Cup."
The annual competition for "The Cup" is one of the highlights of the Veterans Golf Classic as members of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) battle for the bragging rights of "The Cup." At the end of the tournament, officials take the lowest scores from an American Legion team and a V.F.W. team from each flight and total the scores. The organization with the lowest total score is named the winner of "The Cup." All V.F.W and American Legion members can participate in the battle for "The Cup." The V.F.W. has captured "The Cup" during the last two tournaments and the American Legion will attempt to break the V.F.W. streak in 2006. A $500 donation will be made to the winning organization’s favorite charity.
"The 2006 Veterans Golf Classic promises to be the most successful event in the six-year history of the tournament," said Steve Mays, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s tournament director. "We already have more than 500 golfers signed up, which breaks our tournament record of 450 from last year. To make sure that we reach all veterans and military members, we have extended registration through Friday, May 12th. We are looking forward to three days of good times and great golf."
Courses participating in the tournament include Angels Trace Golf Links South, Crow Creek, Indian Wells Golf Club, Lions Paw Golf Links, The Long Bay Club, Man O War Golf, West Course at Myrtle Beach National, SouthCreek at Myrtle Beach National, Palmetto Course at Myrtlewood Golf Club, Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club, Sea Trail – Dan Maples Course, Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club, Wachesaw Plantation East, Whispering Pines Golf Course and The Wizard Golf.
