The Past Captains, having conferred together, are pleased to announce that they have nominated Michael Stanley Randle Lunt as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews for the year 2006-2007. He will assume the office of Captain at the traditional ‘Driving In’ ceremony on Thursday 21 September.

Michael Lunt, 70, was educated at Uppingham School and on leaving was commissioned into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment with whom he served in Egypt from 1953 – 1955.

Following that brief spell overseas, he became a director of the family wholesale textile business in Birmingham and when the company was taken over by Courtaulds, he took up the position of European golf sales manager for Slazenger. He retired in 1998 after 11 years as secretary/manager of Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

Michael Lunt followed his father, Stanley, the English Amateur Champion of 1934, into a glittering career in amateur golf. This started when, aged only 14, he represented England as a boy international for the first of four successive years.

Among his many tournament successes were his wins in the Amateur Championship at St Andrews in 1963 – he finished runner-up in 1964 – and the English Amateur Championship in 1966 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. He played in four Walker Cup matches between 1959 and 1965 and in his last appearance was a member of the side that gained a halved match (11-11) at Five Farms, Maryland. In 1964 he was in the Great Britain & Ireland team that won the Eisenhower Trophy at Olgiata, Rome.

In addition to representing England between 1956 and 1966, he was their non-playing captain in the four years from 1972 – 1975

Michael joined The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1963 and has served on The R&A’s Championship Committee and the Rules of Golf Committee.

He is a member of several clubs and plays most of his golf at Walton Heath to a handicap of four.

Michael and his wife Vicki live in Surrey and have a daughter, a son and two grandchildren.
