CARLSBAD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 1, 2006–Callaway Golf (NYSE:ELY) Staff Professional Niclas Fasth fired a final round 69 on Sunday and went on to win the Andalucia Open de Espana in a thrilling four-hole playoff at the San Roque Club in Cadiz.
Fasth secured his fourth career win, third straight playoff win and first of 2006 when he holed a five-footer for birdie on the fourth extra hole. Fasth, who turned 34 on Saturday, finished at 18-under-par 270, edging Englishman John Bickerton, who had equaled the course record with a 63 to earn his spot in the two-man playoff.
Fasth used a bag full of Callaway Golf(R) clubs including the Big Bertha(R) Fusion(R) FT-3(TM) Driver, X Tour 3-wood, X-Tour(TM) Irons, Fusion FT-Hybrid, the new HX(R) Tour Golf Ball and an Odyssey(R) Putter.
The Callaway Golf FT-3 Driver was the #1 brand choice of touring pros at the Spanish Open, with 55 in play, and Callaway Golf won the overall driver count with a total of 60. The Company also was #1 in fairway woods and putters (with its Odyssey brand) and shared the lead in utility clubs.
"I am very pleased with the way I battled this week, especially on a new course like this," Fasth said. "I hit a great shot to make birdie on the final playoff hole, a 9-iron from 145 yards."
Fellow Callaway Golf Staffer Thomas Bjorn led briefly on Sunday and also closed with a 69. Bjorn narrowly missed a 5-foot putt at the 18th that would have put him in the playoff and finished joint third at 17-under-par 271.
