For the 11th time in his illustrious career, the current #2 money earner on the PGA Tour grinded to a first place finish on the PGA Tour. The sudden-death victory at the Wachovia Championship Sunday was extra sweet due to the fact that the winner hadn’t won a playoff in 10 years and because he has been so close to winning in recent weeks.
"Probably getting so close a few weeks ago and losing here last year in a playoff made it more special," said the winner. " I regard this as a really good event. It’s a big golf course and a strong field."
Eight of the Top 10 players in the world were in the field fighting for the $1.134 million paycheck.
The champion used a 20-degree 3DX Ironwood by Nickent Golf in his dramatic playoff victory, a club that has been in his bag for four Top 3 finishes in 2006. The club was used several times each round and produced longer shots that landed softly on the green.
"You can take it high in the air and have it land really soft,” said the Wachovia champion in April about his hybrids. "The ball will stop easier on the green, instead of having it hit and roll off the back of the green, which is what happens with long irons.”
The win was Nickent Golf’s 5th PGA Tour win in the last year-and-a-half, three of which have been on the Nationwide Tour, including a win last week at the BMW Pro Am at the Cliffs.
"Our first PGA Tour win at the Zurich Classic was very special because it was our first win on the big tour," said Nickent CEO Michael Lee. " But this win means so much to us because of how big the tournament is. It has the best players in the world. We have been fortunate to have one of the most talented players in the world play our golf club. He is such a great champion, and we are very proud to be a part of it."
