Mickelson Decides Not To Play EDS Byron Nelson Championship

Scottsdale, AZ, (May 8, 2006) – Phil Mickelson, winner of the BellSouth Classic and Masters this season, has decided not to play the EDS Byron Nelson Championship this week in Irving, TX, for personal reasons.

"This is in no way a reflection on the tournament, which is one of my favorites on tour," said Mickelson, who called Mr. Nelson to express his regrets. "The Salesmanship Club does an outstanding job with the event every year and I’m sure it will be a success again this week."

Mickelson’s eighth career win came in the 1996 Nelson event at the age of 25. He has played it annually since then and 12 times overall, including in 1992 as an amateur.

Mickelson currently plans to take three weeks off and play the Memorial Tournament and Barclays Classic before attempting to win a third consecutive major championship, the U.S. Open.
