Orlando, Fla., (May 17, 2006) – Golfweek, golf’s news leader and award-winning journal of competitive golf, and the host of over 40 ranked tournaments, is launching the first ever women’s amateur tournament series with Golfweek’s Women’s Amateur Series.
In 2006, the Women’s Amateur Series will consist of three regional scratch events, open to women over the age of 25 held throughout the U.S.
"With the Women’s Amateur Series we’re hoping to fill a much needed void and create not only tournaments but a community of competitive women from across the country," said Publisher Jim Nugent. "We plan to start with three events in 2006 and grow the program in 2007 operating under the motto ‘No Prom Queens No College Co-Eds and From Now On, No More Excuses.’"
The 2006 schedule is as follows:
July 29-30 – Golfweek’s Western Women’s Team Amateur held at Sandia Golf Club in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be a two-person, best-ball gross score event, flighted after the first round. Player requirements are Mid-Am or older (25+). The entry fee of $500 per team, includes two rounds of tournament golf and lunch each day.
September 9-10 – Golfweek’s Mixed Couples Championship held at Sea Trail Golf Club in Sunset Beach, N.C., will be a mixed couples, best-ball gross score event, flighted after the first round. Player requirements are Mid-Am or older (25+). The entry fee of $300 per team, includes two rounds of tournament golf and lunch each day.
September 30 – October 1 – Golfweek’s Women’s Amateur held at Hawthorn Woods in Hawthorn, Ill., will be a 36-hole individual stroke play gross score event. Division requirements are Mid-Am (25-39), Mid-Senior (40-49), Senior (50-59) and Super Senior (60+). The entry fee of $350 includes one practice round, two rounds of tournament golf and lunch each day.
