(May 22, 2006) – After three playoff holes, the winner of this week’s Henrico County Open on the Nationwide Tour was able to celebrate his first win since the 2002 Honda Classic on the PGA Tour. Only Nickent Golf was able to start celebrating a little earlier than the champion. The reason?
Both players in the playoff were playing Nickent’s new 3DX DC hybrids. In fact, 5 of the Top 5 finishers were playing 3DX DC hybrids!
"To tell you the truth, we didn’t know who to root for," said Director of Marketing Jon Claffey. "We had players all over the leader board. My boss called me to see who he should be rooting for and I had to look up the Darrell Survey to figure it out. The 2nd place finisher from the playoff put us in this week for the first time, so we had to go and study the club count to make sure. When the playoff started, we knew it was a win and we started to relax."
The win makes Nickent’s 3DX hybrids the winningest hybrid on the 2006 PGA and Nationwide Tours. Nickent now has six wins on the PGA Tours from 2005-2006, including back-to-back wins at the Henrico County Open. This year’s champion put a 3DX DC in his bag just three weeks ago in Virginia Beach.
"I’ve been playing well of late," the winner said. "I had a 14th-place finish last week and I knew things were really moving in the right direction."
He claimed $81,000 with the win to move from 86th to 8th on the Nationwide Tour money list. The winner, who won the 1997 U.S. Amateur and finished in the Top 50 on the PGA Tour money list in 2002, will play in the St. Jude Classic in Memphis this week.
Eleven players in the Top 30 on the Nationwide Tour money list are currently using Nickent hybrids. Some are young players looking to get to the big dance for the first time. Some are ex-winners on the PGA Tour building their games back into championship form.
"A win here, boy it feels great," the Henrico winner said. "It’s not the PGA Tour, but you still get those same nervous butterflies in your stomach as you do winning the Honda Classic. It was good to be able to overcome those and come out on top."
Nickent hopes the winning continues, as it seems to be translating into sales.
"It has just been crazy lately," said Nickent National Sales Manager Jim Grundberg." We have won three times in the last few weeks and it just keeps coming. The # 2 player on the PGA Tour wins the Wachovia with Nickent, we get two more huge wins on the Nationwide Tour. Our phones are ringing off the hook right now!"
