CONCORD, N.C. (May 25, 2006) – Rocky River Golf Club has moved up another notch to No. 77 in the ranking of North Carolina’s 100 best golf courses.
This marks the fifth year that the public course, owned by the City of Concord, has appeared in the North Carolina Golf Panel’s Top 100. It marks the third straight year the course has improved its ranking. Rocky River was No. 78 last year and No. 79 in 2004.
The annual ranking considers all of the state’s estimated 565 golf courses – public and private – and is one of the most respected surveys of North Carolina courses.
"Rocky River Golf Club rates above a lot of private clubs as far as the condition and quality of the golf course," said head professional Floyd Gragg. "The City has made the commitment to keep the course in excellent condition and our superintendent, Mason Ivy, provides a great product. I think there is still room to move up in the rankings."
Rocky River received 349 points in balloting of 135 golf professionals, select amateurs, industry executives and golf media who comprise the panel. The course ranked just behind Pinehurst No. 6 and just ahead of the Maples Course at Sea Trail Resort.
A complete list of Top 100 courses in North Carolina and an explanation of the ranking system are available online at www.ncgolfpanel.com.
Located near Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Rocky River Golf Club was designed by noted course architect Dan Maples and opened Sept. 13, 1997. It’s owned by the City of Concord and professionally managed by Signet Golf Associates of Pinehurst.
"Throughout the development process, we envisioned Rocky River to be a country club experience for the public to enjoy," said Barry Embler, president of Signet Golf Associates. "This ranking shows that vision has become a reality."
