Legendary Resort Ushers In New Era for Golf Instruction
CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 26, 2006) – A new $1.5 million practice complex is in full operation at La Costa Resort and Spa, a significant step toward launching a new era for instruction at the famed resort.
"This is an outstanding place for golfers of all ages to enjoy improving their game," said Desi Howe, the Director of Golf and La Costa, part of the family of KSL Resorts destinations. "The renovation now gives us a learning center that meets the high standards expected of La Costa, and illustrates the vision La Costa has for creating a balanced golf program."
Not only does La Costa feature a full range of instruction from its staff of golf professionals, it is the home of the Roger Fredericks Golf Swing Flexibility Program. The new practice facility also is headquarters for the La Costa Junior Summer Golf Academy, and as part of La Costa’s commitment to its exceptional golf environment, boys and girls ages 17 and younger can play a round of golf each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for a special rate of $49, starting after 1:30 p.m., and an accompanying adult can play for only $99.
The practice range renovation project started in late February, expanding from 4.5 acres to 10 acres of overall space and installing new sod, drainage and irrigation. There now are two distinct "wings" for hitting, at the west and east ends of the facility, with the putting and chipping greens conveniently placed in between. Raised target greens are designed into appropriate distances and the enclosure is to get new netting all around. The new short-game area features two greens and bunkering. An attractive, landscaped entrance to the practice area and more convenient golf cart parking near the hitting spaces are part of the improvements.
"We could not be more pleased with the results of this project, which more than doubles the size of our pre-existing range," Howe said. "It is one of the significant projects that are ongoing to enhance what already is a world-class golf experience at La Costa."
Legendary among professional and amateur golfers, as well as professional and amateur tennis players, the resort embarked upon a $140 million renovation in late 2001. The transformation features a completely new Spa at La Costa, featuring 42 treatment rooms and a lush 15,000 sq ft garden courtyard complete with pool, Jacuzzi, Roman waterfalls and a Spa Cafe. All guestrooms and suites have been redesigned, as well, with the elegant Villa Rooms and Villa Suites making their debut in January of 2006. The acclaimed BlueFire Grill opened in February of 2005, as part of the clubhouse renovation.
La Costa’s two courses – the North Course and South Course — each feature a classic design that include striking and traditional touches, challenging golfers’ shot-making ability from tee to green. Four sets of tees provide a course length for all players to enjoy. Both courses are snuggled into the foothills of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego, meandering through 400 scenic acres accented by luxurious homes.
