Nike Golf leads PGA Tour with Most Driver, Irons, Fairway Woods and Wedge Wins
BEAVERTON, Ore. (June 5, 2006) – Nike Golf Tour staff member Carl Pettersson emerged victorious at the prestigious Memorial Tournament by winning Jack Nicklaus’ event by two strokes over Brett Wetterich and Zach Johnson. Pettersson’s steely performance qualified him for the U.S. Open and propelled him from 39th to 11th on the 2006 PGA Tour money list. Fellow Tour staff members Trevor Immelman and Paul Azinger magnified Nike Golf’s strong weekend at Muirfield Village Golf Course by both posting top-10 finishes.
Pettersson’s win brings Nike Golf’s PGA Tour titles to seven in 2006 and 11 globally. His victory also reinforced Nike Golf’s notable dominance on the PGA Tour as its SasQuatch Driver, Nike irons, wedges and fairway woods lead the Tour with the most wins in each category. The SasQuatch Driver and Nike irons each have seven PGA Tour wins; Nike Fairway woods lead with six victories; and the Nike wedges have accumulated seven titles.
Since putting Nike Golf’s SasQuatch driver into his bag in August of 2005, Pettersson has enjoyed repeated success on the PGA Tour, having captured the first two victories of his career in less than eight months. Plus, his success with the SasQuatch mirrors the success that the popular driver is enjoying on a global scale. The SasQuatch has already won 11 times this year and has accumulated 16 worldwide victories since it was launched last November.
Pettersson coolly managed his way around the Muirfield Village Golf Course in a controlled and intelligent manner. His short game emerged as his strong suit, using Nike’s 49, 55 and 59-degree wedges. The 28-year-old Swede holed a clutch chip shot for birdie on the par-5 11th and got up and down on three straight holes to eliminate suspense and keep his competitors at a distance.
Rounding out his winning arsenal are his Nike Pro Combo Tour irons, SasQuatch Fairway Metals, and the award-winning Nike One Black ball, which recently was ranked number one by a leading consumer publication. In 2006, Nike has amassed a total of 11 global wins in its ball category with its Nike One Platinum (9) and Nike One Black balls (2).
Pettersson also wore Nike Golf apparel, SP-6 footwear and Nike Dri-Fit Tour glove.
