FAR HILLS, N.J. (June 6, 2006) – Milwaukee Country Club in River Hills, Wis., has been selected by the United States Golf Association as the site of the 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The dates of the championship are Sept. 6-11.
Brown Deer Park Golf Course, a public course in Milwaukee that has hosted the 1951, 1966 and 1977 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships and is the current home of the PGA Tour’s Greater Milwaukee Open, will be used as the second course for stroke-play qualifying.
It is the first time in USGA history that a combination of a private and public facility will be used to host a USGA championship.
Milwaukee Country Club was formed in 1894 and the original course opened in 1896. In 1911, the club moved to its present site in River Hills. In 1929, the existing course, designed by Harry Colt and Charles Alison, opened. In 1974, Robert Trent Jones Sr. served as a consultant for minor revisions to the course.
The 2008 Mid-Amateur will be the third USGA event conducted at Milwaukee Country Club. Previously, the club hosted the 1969 Walker Cup Match and the 1988 USGA Senior Amateur. The club has also hosted numerous Wisconsin State Opens and various Wisconsin amateur championships.
"We are honored that the USGA has decided to return to Milwaukee Country Club," said club president Robert Beal. "We welcome the opportunity to host the players and know they will enjoy the challenge our course will present."
Lynford Lardner, USGA president in 1972-73, served as president of Milwaukee Country Club. Current USGA Vice President Jim Reinhart is also a member of the club.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur, for amateur golfers 25 and older who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are solely for amateurs.
Prior to 2008, the U.S. Mid-Amateur will be played at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz., from Sept. 9-14, 2006, and at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., from Sept. 29-Oct. 4, 2007.
