FAR HILLS, N.J. (June 7, 2006) – Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla., has been selected as the site of the 2010 USGA Senior Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association has announced. The Championship will be played October 2-7.
Designed by Tom Fazio, Lake Nona opened in 1986. It is the home course to many PGA and LPGA professionals who use Orlando as their home base.
The club has hosted the World Cup of Golf, the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990, the 1995 USGA State Team Championship, and the 2004 Tavistock Cup (a match-play style event between Lake Nona and Isleworth touring pro members).
Lake Nona has also hosted USGA sectional qualifiers for the U.S. Open in 1993, 2003 and 2004. Most recently, the club played host to this year’s NCAA Men’s Division I East Regional.
"Lake Nona is a demanding golf course that will test even the most seasoned contestants," said Andy Odenbach, VP of Sports Ventures for Tavistock Group. "Lake Nona looks forward to welcoming both the contestants and the USGA to Orlando for a memorable week of competition in 2010."
Prior to 2010, the USGA Senior Amateur will be played at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., from September 16-21, 2006; at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan., from September 1-6, 2007; at The Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Ill., from Sept. 20-25, 2008; and at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, from Sept. 12-17, 2009.
The USGA Senior Amateur is open to amateurs, age 55 and older, who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 7.4. It is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
